Drax Marvel Comics |
At this weekend's C2E2 comic book convention in Chicago, Marvel Entertainment announced the upcoming launch of Drax, a solo comic book starring the interstellar bright green bruiser from Guardians of the Galaxy, to be co-written by former professional wrestler CM Punk.
Details on the series, which will launch this winter following the conclusion of the company's much-hyped Secret Wars crossover event, were mostly missing from the announcement; the identities of Punk's co-writer, as well as the artist of the series, were both left a mystery, although the first issue will feature a cover by one-time Hulk and Superman artist Ed McGuinness.
According to Marvel, the series will follow the character from "the intergalactic octagon to the far reaches of outer space."
The announcement means that Marvel will have expanded its Guardians of the Galaxy line of comics to include solo series starring each member of the group, a rarity in comics. Both The Legendary Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon launched last summer to accompany the release of the movie, with Groot receiving his own series in June. A Gamora title, to be written by movie co-writer Nicole Perlman, was announced in October for a spring 2015 release, only to be rescheduled for later this year at the last moment.
Additionally, the success of the Guardians movie has resulted in the launch of Guardians Team-Up, a monthly series that pairs members of the team with other Marvel superheroes, as well as a Howard the Duck series prompted by the character's post-credits cameo and Guardians 3000, a series based on the original comic book version of the concept.
