Steps to the grid

You can print the construction lines and draw on parchment paper, or you can draw the grid yourself by following the steps below…
1) At the top of the sheet, determine the position of the head and draw its conditional size using an oval.
2) Draw a vertical line across the middle of the head. This will be the center vertical line of the drawing.
3) From the top edge of the head, draw up two segments equal to the height of the head and one segment one third of its height. Across the segment boundaries, draw horizontal lines. The top line will be the upper limit of the figure.
4) From the top of the head, draw down three segments equal to the height of the head and one segment equal to a quarter of the height of the head.
5) From the central vertical line of the figure, measure and draw:
• Two segments equal head width to the left side of the line.
• Two segments equal head width to the right side of the line.
• A segment equal to half the head width to the right side of the line.
Passing the boundaries of each segment, we draw vertical lines. The far left and far right segments are the vertical boundaries of the drawing.

Step 1

Mark the width and height of the statue of liberty. Draw a circle for her head. Add a guideline to this, not forgetting to mark the size of your head. Draw a base for the statue.

Step 2

Add a line that will act as the center of the body. With short lines, define the shoulders, chest and waist. Mark facial features and neck.

Step 3

Outline the shape of the clothes and the book.

Step 4

Add more lines to indicate the folds of the tunic and mark the torch with several lines.

Step 5

Draw the hands and fingers. Outline the crown tips. Add a nose, mouth, eyes and eyebrows of the Statue of Liberty.

Step 6

Trace the largest folds. Add lines to the torch.

Step 7

Work on the figure, paying special attention to detail: small folds and flames.

Step 8

Outline the Statue of Liberty. Add some details. Delete all guidelines.

Question: Have you ever seen a baby "drawing" with the spoon on your baby's plate when you are starting to eat alone? Child drawing with food I might venture to say that if you did not see it, you did not pay attention. You may also have heard from your child's pediatrician that food with color and organized presentation helps to develop perceptions far beyond the simple taste, or perhaps not, depends on your child's pediatrician and not on you. Tools for Watercolor = part 2 of 4 The Tools

THE TOOLS I feel silly writing about tools. Hundreds of pages in watercolor books and site have already advised you on this subject; furthermore, the tools used by the best watercolorists have little to do with the qualities in their works. The color and value chords of each painter, the way he divides space, where his interest lies in the gamut between illustration and decoration, would be his own even if he painted with a sponge and a shaving brush. I work on the ground, seated on a small folding stool. I have reasons for doing so. It gives the same free arm swing the Orientals get painting on their knees, and the angle of vision at that distance encompasses all of my watercolor, so colors and thrusts can be related. But, no matter how much you like my pictures, if you have a big stomach, or are rather broad astern, you will not work on the ground from a small folding stool. When I use a pencil, a 2-B makes a mark dark enough to be seen under a wash witho...

Tools for Watercolor = part 3 of 4

PALETTE I use an O'Hara palette, upon which the color is a mound on a flat surface. The reason for this is that sullied color runs off and leaves pure color available on the top of the mound. A dinner plate or enameled tray has the same advantage. Any palette with color in a depression is mechanically inferior. Contaminated color becomes a constant problem. Water stays in declivities and when paper is wet you cannot get dry color to put into wet areas. Masterpieces have been painted with color in little holes, but they were made in spite of this handicap. BRUSHES Eighty percent of my painting is done with a two-inch camel's-hair flat brush and a one-inch red sable flat. In many pictures no other brushes were used. This may be because demonstrating to classes everyday — committed to one hour of drawing and painting, and talking while I paint (students cannot sit still longer) — I find these brushes faster. The large flat brush, however, has the following undeniable v...
